Insect RepellEnt

You'll want to choose your insect repellent based on several factors, including effectiveness, duration of protection, safety, and personal preferences.

  1. DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is highly effective against mosquitoes, ticks and flies, and it provides long-lasting protection. Just watch out for any skin irritation if you're on the sensitive side. Stick to the 30% concentration or lower and you're golden.

  2. Picaridin is a solid alternative. It's less likely to cause skin irritation and has a milder scent. It's effective against mosquitoes, ticks, flies, and other biting insects. As a rule of thumb, go for the 20% concentration.

  3. Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus is a natural repellent. The CDC recognizes the synthesized version of oil of lemon eucalyptus, known as PMD (para-menthane-3,8-diol), as an effective mosquito repellent. It's generally considered safe for use on adults and children over three years old. Not gonna lie, my wife and I find that the natural version (and other essential oils like citronella, lemongrass, etc.) doesn't work as effectively or last as long. If you choose this option, apply generously and often.

  4. Permethrin is an insect repellent that can be applied to clothing, tents, and other gear. It's highly effective against ticks, mosquitoes, and other insects. Treating clothing with permethrin provides long-lasting protection, even through multiple washes. Don't apply permethrin directly to the skin, just to clothing or gear.

It might be a good idea to have a combination of repellents on hand, like a skin-applied repellent along with treated clothing and gear. Wear long-sleeved clothing, pants, and socks if the weather isn't scorching and you'll be just fine.
